Overview

24/7 FleetCleaning Services was appointed by Peel Ports to carry out the specialist cleaning of over 30 port tugs used throughout their dock operations.

These powerful machines operate continuously in one of the harshest working environments, with heavy grease, hydraulic oil, dockside dirt and industrial contamination quickly building up around engines, chassis and critical mechanical components.

The objective was not simply to improve appearance, but to prepare each tug for servicing and maintenance by removing years of accumulated contamination from key engineering areas.

The Challenge

This project presented several operational and environmental challenges.

The site had:

• No dedicated wash area.
• No suitable drainage.
• No mains water supply.
• Heavy grease and oil contamination.
• Over 30 port tugs requiring cleaning.
• Machinery that needed preparing for engineering inspections and servicing.

Traditional pressure washing was not an option due to the environmental risks associated with contaminated wash water.

Our Mobile Environmental Solution

To complete the work safely, 24/7 Fleet Cleaning Services supplied a completely self-contained mobile cleaning system.

This included:

• Mobile hot-water pressure washing equipment.
• Our own water supply.
• Specialist portable wash mat.
• Wastewater containment system.
• Grease and oil recovery.
• Fully trained operatives.

The wash mat was assembled on site before work commenced, creating a fully contained cleaning area.

Throughout the cleaning process, all wastewater, grease and oil remained within the containment system, preventing any contamination from entering the dock environment.

Once all the tugs had been cleaned, the wastewater and contaminants were removed for correct disposal before the wash mat was dismantled and taken away, leaving the site clean and ready for normal operations.

The tugs had accumulated heavy deposits of:
